Ed Viberg
immigrated from Sweden to Canada in 1914 at the age of 7 with his mother and sisters. His father had come to Canada several years earlier in 1910 to prepare the family farm in Eastern Saskatchewan. During Ed’s late teens and early twenties he had developed a reputation as a harness maker and would travel around the prairies with different threshing crews maintaining harnesses and flat belting that kept combines and threshers going.
About 1930
Ed moved to Shellbrook, Saskatchewan to open his own boot and harness business. With the great depression in high gear Ed and his wife Gladys worked for many long hours taking pride in their work. They staked their reputation on craftsmanship, high quality and durable workboots and harness. Their all leather workboots retailed for $4.95 back then.
In 1949
with the closing of several sawmills in northern Saskatchewan Viberg Boot packed up lock, stock and barrel and moved to Prince George, British Columbia. During the 50s and 60s, Viberg boots were being worn throughout British Columbia and Alberta.
In 1970
the Viberg Boot factory was relocated to Victoria, BC. Ed along with local shoe repairman Bert Simpson had developed a new boot sole for the logging industry using replaceable screw-in caulks that simply needed to be unscrewed and replaced when worn out (prior to this a steel caulk was pounded into the leather sole). By the end of 1971 Viberg Boot was producing the first leather caulk boot with replacement caulks. The logging industry flocked to this new idea and 35 years later the screw-in caulk is the standard for logging boots.
